"Theories of Creative Design" is the first of two summer schools proposed as part of the DESIRE: "Creative Design for Innovation in Science and Technology", Programme of Marie Curie Initial Training Network. DESIRE aims to establish an interdisciplinary network of researchers investigating creative design in various applied domains, including interaction design, industrial design, and arts design. It was promoted by seven partners: Lancaster University (coordinator), University of Milan, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Aveiro, Copenhagen Business School, The Portuguese Catholic University, and Philips Research.

A single theme, "Theories and Models of Creative Design", will ensure consistency between the two schools. Within this theme, the first school will focus on theories of creative design, while the second will focus on modeling creative processes in design. The two summer-school programs are self-contained and designed to be attended either separately or in combination.

The 2009 summer school will build on a grounding in creativity theory and quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze approaches to design and innovation. Industrial, artistic, and collaborative design will be explored from the perspective of the user, the cognitive scientist, the software engineer, and the interaction scholar, as well as the designer. Several aspects of creative design, such as managing imagery, haptics and sound in designing user experience and collecting user feedback, will be examined.
